Co-Occurring Disorder & Alcohol Treatment Program
Malibu Horizon offers a drug and alcohol treatment program that uses an innovative medical model. We look beyond the basic addiction symptoms and try to identify co-occurring disorders in those who seek alcohol or opiate treatment with us. A large percentage of the addicts we see have a co-occurring disorder (co-morbid psychiatric illness).
Consider these statistics concerning Bipolar Disorders, ADHD, Anxiety is frequently a common co-occuring disorder with addiction:
- 60% of the people diagnosed with a bipolar condition also suffer from addiction
- 30-50% of the ADHD population suffers from addiction
- 25% of those diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression suffer from addiction
Anxiety is frequently a common co-occurring disorder with those seeking alcohol detox or relief from other addictions. Anxiety may accompany one or more of the following:
- Panic Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Phobias
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
If addiction treatment only addresses changing the behaviors, then only the symptoms of the disease are being treated.
After years of study and research, our staff has determined that you must treat the entire patient--including any co-occurring disorders--in order to have effective long-term results that last well after outpatient detox.
The Malibu Horizon Approach
How do we treat a dual-diagnosis? The Malibu Horizon approach is to simultaneously treat the co-occurring disorder along with the addiction for the fastest, most effective outcome.
- We start with an individualized physical and psychological assessment
- Medically, the addiction or dependency is treated specifically to address withdrawals, urges and cravings
- Next we create a plan of action for the patient that will include:
- Cognitive/behavioral, individual, group and family therapies
- Any appropriate medication and management to treat co-occurring conditions such as clinical depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety or trauma.
- A long-term plan is created along with the patient that will address relapse prevention and emphasize healthy choices, such as:
- Next step transitional living
- Choices for follow up therapy programs, including 12-step options
Malibu Horizon Treatment Services
Our residential treatment center provides personalized services for all types of addiction.
Upon admittance to our residential program, we would take immediate steps to evaluate your current status.
- Complete emotional and physical assessment
- Psychiatric/psychological evaluation
- Medical history
- Physical

Next, we would take some initial steps to begin your recovery:
- Comprehensive/comfortable drug and alcohol detoxification
- Medications management
Then, you would begin to be integrated into your individualized program, which might include some or all of the following:
- Primary group & individual therapies
- Cognitive/Behavioral group and individual therapies
- Family dynamics and systems work
- Drug & alcohol educational
- Creative expression
- Experiential therapies
- 12-step program choices
From the first day in our program, we begin working with you to develop a discharge plan that will work for your life. We will focus on:
- Transitional living options
- Relapse prevention and aftercare
- 12-step or other programs
Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Treatment at Malibu Horizon also includes making healthy lifestyle choices.
- Nutritious and delicious meals prepared by an on-site chef
- Daily exercise options consisting of gym classes, beach walks, hikes and equestrian outings
- Experiential activities such as massage therapy, yoga, art therapy and more
Continuing Care
At Malibu Horizon, we begin discharge planning from Day One.
The need to plan what will happen after discharge is very important. Working together we’ll locate the right transitional living program that best suits your personal needs. So you will leave Malibu Horizon with the right tools and a plan of action.
But we’ll always be there for you. In fact, every Malibu Horizon alumni is welcomed back to the program for an alumni meeting once a week. This weekly session is free and ongoing.
We’ll work with you closely to complete any required paperwork or insurance processing forms. Malibu Horizon accepts all PPO and POS insurance.
