Dilaudid

Background of Dilaudid

Dilaudid is a medication that eliminates pain. Dilaudid is a narcotic analgesic that can cure moderate to severe pain. Dilaudid is a drug manufactured by Abbot Laboratories Inc., with a brand name of Hydromorphone Hydrochloride. Dilaudid has similar drug properties to that of codeine and morphine. Dilaudid takes effect within fifteen minutes, and remains in effect for more than five hours. The street names for Dilaudid are dillies, little d and drugstore heroin.

Dilaudid mainly produce its effects on the gastrointestinal tract as well as on the central nervous system. Dilaudid is a drug that is prescribed to reduce the pain due to surgery, headache, burns, cancer, renal colic, soft tissue and bone injury, biliary colic and heart attack. Dilaudid acts as a pain-reliever as it binds to certain receptors in the brain and nervous system. Dilaudid obstructs the ascending pain pathways in the central nervous system, heightens the level of the threshold of pain and alters pain perception.

History of Dilaudid

During the time of the ancient Greeks, Dilaudid and other sedative narcotics were used to treat ailments and reduce pain; these include drugs with natural opioid. Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, believed that diseases had a natural origin. He applied medication through natural therapies. Hippocrates disregarded the qualities of opium.

Due to further studies of opium addiction, it has been found out that morphine can help treat opium addiction. Morphine was advertised and prescribed by doctors. During the American Civil War, morphine was used as a surgical anesthetic and as an effective painkiller.

The 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act as well as the Harrison Narcotics Act prohibited possession of narcotics. The law required prescription from the doctors. During this time, heroin also came into use. Dilaudid was developed in Germany in 1920. The drug, Dilaudid, was used to lessen severe pain as well as painful dry cough.

Application of Dilaudid

Dilaudid can be taken as a pill, as oral liquids, suppositories, intravenously or within the vein and as ampules or sterile solution. The starting dose of Dilaudid tablets is two to four milligrams every four to six hours. Dilaudid tablets are available in 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, 4 mg and 8 mg. The liquid Dilaudid, which contains 1 mg per milliliter, is taken one-half to two teaspoonfuls every three to six hours. The Dilaudid suppository contains 3 mg, and is inserted rectally every six to eight hours with one dose.

Contents of Dilaudid

Dilaudid contains hydromorphone hydrochloride. The tablet also has magnesium stearate, lactose anhydrous, and may contain little amounts of sodium metabisulfite. The Dilaudid liquid, which may also contain sodium metabisulfite, on the other hand, has methylparaben, propylparaben, glycerin, sucrose and purified water. Dilaudid is considered as an anesthesia adjunct, analgesic, antitussive, and opioid analgesic category. Dilaudid is also a potent Schedule II of the Controlled Substance Act. This means that Dilaudid has a high potential for abuse, and severe restrictions and abuse of Dilaudid may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.
